JFS of Greater New Haven Offers a Variety of Senior Services

by Amy Pressman

There’s a local resource that offers several elder care services including community referrals, assessments and care planning, counseling, friendly visitors and more: Jewish Family Service of Greater New Haven.  JFS offers these services to all members of the community, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or ability to pay.  Services are coordinated by Joan Sloan, LCSW, who has worked for JFS, serving older adults, for over 10 years.

“I believe in trying to keep people as independent as possible.  The goal is to keep individuals at home or to have them go where they need to go to live the best way that they can”, says Joan.  Joan consults with family members of older adults to best assess the needs of their loved ones and, through her wide network of community resources and partners, recommends the care solutions that make the most sense on a case-by-case basis.

Much of what Joan does is connecting people with the proper resources, including home care, counseling, or other community services.  She routinely consults with the out-of-town family members of her clients, to assist those who may not live in close proximity to their elderly loved ones, providing information regarding local resources as well as providing assistance to local family members who serve as caregivers.

Another service offered by JFS is food assistance for seniors in need.  Joan frequently refers her clients to the JFS Food Pantry and Nutritional Health Center for those who may be food insecure and in need of supplemental nutrition.  This Food Pantry is located onsite at JFS.

Jewish Family Service of Greater New Haven is located at 1440 Whalley Avenue in New Haven.  If you or a family member can benefit from one or more of these services, please contact Joan at (203) 389-5599 x 139.
